We remember that Paul opened this with a far-reaching “therefore.” Because of God’s grace, Paul tells us, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect” (Romans 12:2). Here he continues showing us what the renewal of our minds looks like as we discern and live according to the will of God.
He begins with the anchor, “Let love be genuine” (Romans 12:9). Our love should not be hypocritical. It is not enough for us to say we love “the church.” Our love should be evident in the way we interact with the people we gather with.
The first way we show that our love is genuine in the renewing of our minds is that we “abhor what is evil” and “hold fast to what is good.” Love is not passive. Genuine love does not make peace with evil, whether in our own lives or in the lives of those we love. We should care enough about one another to encourage what is good and, when necessary, lovingly warn against sin. How do we do this? With “brotherly affection” (Romans 12:10a).
But brotherly affection doesn’t stop at making sure we root out evil and support the good. We should show honor to one another. Paul doesn’t simply say to be honorable around each other; he says, “Outdo one another in showing honor.” Paul endorses competitive honor giving. As we spoke about yesterday, we ought not to think of ourselves more highly than we ought. Paul doesn’t tell us to compete for honor, but to compete in giving it.
Next, to show that our love is genuine in the renewed mind, Paul makes one point clear: Christians aren’t supposed to be lazy about loving one another. We actively search out ways to show the genuineness of our love for God and His people. The word “fervent” here carries a sense of boiling over with action.
How do we keep up? When in hope: rejoicing. When in tribulation: with patience. Always being constant in prayer. Our faith is in a perfect and loving God. He will sustain His people.
Finally, because our love is genuine, we should demonstrate its genuineness by action. Not simply ceremonial action, but practical, everyday action. Remember, we are a body, and the body has needs. We don’t only wait to be asked. Paul tells us to “seek to show hospitality.” This is active. We should be searching for ways to show hospitality to our brothers and sisters.
God has given you grace. Therefore, be transformed by the renewal of your mind, showing genuine love to the body you belong to. Seek out how you can honor and bless your brothers and sisters.
